Volunteer Code of Conduct
Your time volunteering overseas with Volunteer India should be a positive experience both for you and your host community.
Prior to your VII Placement:
Find out how:
+ To keep safe
+ To avoid cultural misunderstandings
+ To make the most of the opportunities
Whilst on your VII Placement:
+ LEARN: Try to learn as much as you teach and to give as much as you take.
+ RESPECT: Respect the cultures, beliefs and opinions of others and treat people with sensitivity and courtesy.
+ JUDGE: Travel with an open mind. Do not judge anything as 'better' or 'worse'; instead learn to appreciate differences.
+ IMPACT: Minimise your impact on the environment. Use resources thoughtfully, take only photos and leave only footprints.
+ ECONOMICS: Use your economic power: buy local products where possible, support socially and environmentally responsible businesses, and pay a fair price when bargaining.
+ SUSTAINABILITY: Make your volunteer placement work sustainable and think about the long-term impact of your work. Can you train a local person? Can you set up systems to continue the work?
Post your VII Placement:
+ REMEMBER: Do not just forget about your overseas experience when you get back home. Build your new skills and awareness into your personal and professional life.
+ PROMISES: Do not make promises you cannot keep. If you tell your host organisation that you will send photographs, write an article or help to raise money when you get back to your country, please make sure you do.
As a CWW volunteer you are also an ambassador for your country.
